Jazz is a mixture of Negro and European music. Its instrumentation and of western origin, Rhythm is from Black Africa. Some of the main characteristics of jazz are spontaneity, vitality and improvisation. Blues are typical of Black music just as “samba do morro” is typical of Brazilian samba. New Orleans is the center of classical jazz. Armstrong, although already dead, is still the greatest name of Dixieland Jazz, one of the many varieties of jazz.
